2025 Farmer’s Day: President Mahama charges professional workers to venture into agriculture

President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians in formal employment, particularly professionals, to take up farming as a supplementary source of income, emphasising that agriculture is no longer the exclusive domain of rural dwellers or full-time farmers.

Speaking at the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration in Ho, Volta Region, on Friday, December 5, 2025, President Mahama dismissed the outdated perception that farming is only for “village folks.”

“Agriculture isn’t only for the village folks,” he stated. “You can work and still be a farmer. Teachers and civil servants can go to work and have farms, and the money from the farm can supplement their incomes.”

The President highlighted that embracing farming as a part-time activity would not only increase individual earnings but also enhance national food security and reduce Ghana’s dependence on food imports.

He encouraged professionals to adopt modern farming techniques, including irrigation systems, improved seedlings, and technology-based solutions that enable effective farm management without daily physical presence.

President Mahama reiterated his administration’s dedication to creating an enabling environment to make agriculture attractive, viable, and profitable for all Ghanaians, regardless of their primary occupations.

The event, held under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future,” honoured outstanding farmers and fishers for their contributions to the nation’s food security and economy.
