NPP must win election 2028 for the sake of Ghana – Bawumia

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged party members to place Ghana’s national interest above personal ambitions and internal rivalries as the NPP gears up to select its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.

In a New Year message to NPP members, Dr Bawumia emphasised that winning the 2028 polls is critical not just for the party, but for the progress and development of Ghana.

“To every NPP member listening to me, let us keep our eyes fixed on the prize. We must win 2028 for the sake of Ghana,” he declared.

The former Vice President warned that allowing internal tensions, rumours, and perceived divisions to fester could undermine the party’s unity and play into the hands of its political opponents. He called for deliberate efforts to avoid actions and statements that could further divide the NPP.

Dr Bawumia stressed that the ongoing flagbearership race should focus on ideas, vision, and policy direction rather than personal attacks, noting that negative internal campaigning only arms opponents with ammunition ahead of the national contest.

“We should not be distracted by the storms around us, the rumours, and the perceived divisions. Let us set aside anything that has the potential to divide our party further. This flagbearership contest should only be about ideas and vision, and not personal attacks on any of us. We only provide ammunition to our opponents if we engage in such anti-party acts,” he added.

He argued that a disciplined, issue-based contest would strengthen party cohesion and boost the NPP’s appeal to the broader Ghanaian electorate as it seeks to return to power.

The NPP is scheduled to elect its presidential candidate on January 31, 2026, in a process expected to kick off formal preparations for the 2028 elections, following recent constitutional amendments designed to widen participation in the flagbearer selection.
