NPP flagbearer race: We knew Bryan’s entry will hurt Ken – Miracles Aboagye

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that the Bawumia camp anticipated Dr Bryan Acheampong’s entry into the presidential race would primarily impact Kennedy Agyapong’s support base rather than erode Bawumia’s own votes.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Sunday, Mr Aboagye explained that Dr Bawumia’s voter support within the party is characterised by a “static and stable” base, making it largely immovable compared to other candidates.

He emphasised that the NPP operates with fixed ideological groupings and blocs at the constituency and polling station levels, where members tend to think, move, and act together consistently.

“Anybody who has followed the NPP and pays close attention to the NPP, you realise that the NPP has an existing system within the party,” he said.

“You would always find some seven people who always think alike and move together and act together,” Mr Aboagye added.

According to him, this structure meant Dr Acheampong’s participation was more likely to draw votes from Kennedy Agyapong’s less fixed bloc, particularly after Alan Kyerematen’s exit from the party in 2023, when many of those supporters consolidated around Agyapong.

“We always knew that Bryan Acheampong’s entering into the race was surely going to hurt Kennedy Agyapong more than Dr Bawumia,” he stated.

Mr Aboagye described Dr Bawumia’s supporters as “more static” and “a bit more stable than the other candidates,” noting that the split in Agyapong’s support was evident in pre-election polls and the final results.

“That split was very obvious from the polls,” he said.

He highlighted that the margin between Dr Bawumia and the runner-up has significantly widened compared to previous contests, attributing it to this dynamic.

“The difference between him and the second-place person has moved to 33 per cent if you compare to 2023,” Mr Aboagye noted.

Official results from the Electoral Commission show Dr Bawumia securing 56.48 per cent of the votes (110,640 votes), comfortably winning the NPP flagbearer position for the 2028 general elections.

Kennedy Agyapong placed second with 23.76 per cent (46,554 votes), while Dr Bryan Acheampong came third with 18.53 per cent (36,303 votes).

The NPP flagbearer race concluded on January 31, 2026, with Dr Bawumia emerging victorious and set to lead the party into the next national elections alongside a yet-to-be-announced running mate.
