Wontumi officially declares bid for NPP national chairman

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the party.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, Wontumi emphasized the need for steady, principled leadership to unify and rebuild the NPP following recent challenges faced by the party.

“Our party has faced challenges and learned hard lessons along the way. At this critical moment, the NPP demands leadership that is steady, principled, and committed to unity,” the statement read.

Wontumi described himself as a “grassroots personified” leader who values every member of the party, from elders to youthful allies, and is willing to make ultimate sacrifices for the NPP’s progress.

He stressed that his bid is not driven by personal ambition but by a desire to strengthen, rebuild, and unify the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

“The road ahead will demand vision, courage, and unwavering determination. Leadership at this moment requires bravery – the courage to stand firm, make difficult decisions, and be willing to lose everything if necessary for the NPP,” he added.

The outspoken regional chairman, who has been a key figure in the NPP’s Ashanti stronghold since his election as regional chairman in 2014 and subsequent re-elections, asserted that his team is ready, organized, and built for the battles ahead.

“Together, we will restore confidence, empower our grassroots, and position the NPP to win decisively in 2028. This is our moment to rise, to lead, and to deliver for the NPP,” the statement concluded.

Wontumi’s declaration comes at a time when the NPP is gearing up for its national congress, expected later in 2026, to elect new national executives following the party’s performance in the 2024 elections, where it faced setbacks against the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NPP’s national council is yet to announce official dates for the congress.
