Ayawaso East by-election: Baba Jamal wins NDC primaries

Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, has emerged victorious in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency.

The keenly contested primary, held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, was organised to select the party’s candidate for the upcoming by-election in the constituency, triggered by the passing of the late MP, Mahama Naser Toure.

According to provisional results from the two voting centres, Baba Jamal polled 431 votes to secure the win. His closest contender, Hajia Amina Adam, a widow of the late MP received 399 votes. Other aspirants included Mohammed Ramme with 88 votes, Dr. Yakubu Azindow with 45 votes, and Mohammed Najib with 1 vote.

The primary drew considerable attention amid reports of campaign activities, including Baba Jamal’s distribution of items such as 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs to delegates. The aspirant described these as goodwill gestures and not attempts to influence the vote.

Baba Jamal’s victory defied pre-primary projections by Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, who had forecasted that Baba Jamal’s support was unlikely to exceed 38%. Dankwah had predicted a comfortable lead for Hajia Amina Adam at around 54%, based on recent polling data and voter trends, with a margin of error of about 3.2%.

Baba Jamal will now represent the NDC as its parliamentary candidate in the Ayawaso East by-election slated for March 3 by the Electoral Commission, as the party aims to retain the seat.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has selected Baba Ali as its candidate for the upcoming election.
