Ayawaso East primary: NDC Majority Caucus calls for cancellation of results, disqualification of candidates

The Majority Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament has called for the immediate annulment of the recently held parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency and the disqualification of any candidates found to have engaged in vote-buying or other unethical practices.

In a statement dated February 5, 2026, and signed by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, the caucus expressed deep concern over widely circulated allegations of inducements that allegedly tainted the February 7, 2026, primary in the Greater Accra Region.

The exercise, meant to select the party’s candidate for the March 3 by-election triggered by the passing of the late MP Naser Toure, was won by Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed with 431 votes, followed by the widow of the late MP Hajia Amina Adam (399 votes), Mohammed Ramne (88 votes), Dr. Yakubu Azindow (45 votes), and Najib Mohammed Sani (1 vote).

The statement noted that reports of delegates receiving cash, 32-inch television sets, food items, and other gifts in exchange for votes have raised serious questions about the integrity of the process.

The Majority Caucus, after thorough deliberations involving both its core and extended leadership, has resolved to formally request the Functional Executive Committee of the NDC to annul the Ayawaso East primary immediately and to bar from any subsequent contest any candidate proven to have participated in or facilitated such unethical conduct.

The caucus reiterated its unwavering commitment to restoring integrity and credibility to Ghanaian politics, describing the alleged developments as inconsistent with the broader national agenda to reset the country’s political culture.

The call comes against the backdrop of growing controversy surrounding the primary. The NDC national leadership had earlier condemned the reported inducements as contrary to the party’s core values and set up a three-member investigative committee to probe the allegations, with warnings of possible cancellation of results where wrongdoing is established.

Separately, the Office of the Special Prosecutor has also initiated investigations into the vote-buying claims in Ayawaso East and related matters.
