The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Baba Jamal, has been elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East in the by-election held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
Baba Jamal secured a decisive victory, polling 10,884 votes to claim the seat vacated following the death of the incumbent MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January 2026.
According to official results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC), the NDC candidate garnered over 63% of the valid votes cast. His main rival, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,009 votes, while independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda polled 1,885 votes.
Other candidates included Ibrahim Idrissu, who obtained 43 votes, and Kanor David with 104 votes. A total of 16,928 valid votes were cast, with 120 rejected ballots, bringing the overall turnout to 17,048 votes.
The by-election proceeded peacefully across the constituency’s polling stations, despite notably low voter turnout. Electoral officials and security personnel ensured smooth operations throughout the process.
The outcome aligns closely with pre-election projections by pollster Global InfoAnalytics. In a survey conducted between February 28 and March 1, 2026, Baba Jamal was forecasted to win approximately 75% of the vote, with Baba Ali trailing significantly.
Baba Jamal’s win marks his return to Parliament, where he previously represented the Akwatia constituency. The former Ghana High Commissioner to Nigeria is expected to be sworn in shortly to resume legislative duties on behalf of the people of Ayawaso East.
