We must move from recognition to action – Mahama on UN reparations plan

Ghana is set to take a major step on the global stage as it prepares to table a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly on slavery and reparations.

President John Dramani Mahama says the move is aimed at pushing the international community beyond acknowledgement toward concrete action.

“We seek to move from recognition of historical injustice to a structured dialogue on repair,” he stated.

According to him, the proposal is backed by the African Union, CARICOM, and other countries, reflecting a broader coalition rather than a single-country effort.

He described the initiative as “an invitation to engage in honest reflection, constructive dialogue, and collective action.”

Mahama stressed that the goal is not to assign blame to present generations.

“This is not about assigning collective guilt,” he said, adding that the focus is on addressing how past injustices continue to shape present inequalities.

The resolution is expected to open discussions around practical steps, including investment in education, health, and economic opportunities, as part of a long-term process of repair.
