Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz says home-based players will be considered for the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup squad if they meet his selection criteria.
Domestic players have had limited representation in recent national team call-ups, with Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare the only regular inclusion from the Ghana Premier League in the past few months.
Speaking at his unveiling, on Thursday, April 23, 2026, Queiroz stressed that selection would be based on merit rather than where a player plies his trade.
“Nobody owns the national team shirt. The players dream to represent the country, and it is our job to give them a fair and right opportunity,” he said.
“My job is to be sure that the ones who wear the shirt are those who deserve to be there. The players I select will be capable, fit, and experienced.”
The 2026 tournament will feature an expanded 48-team format, with Queiroz expected to name his final squad by June 1.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L with England, Croatia, and Panama. The Black Stars have not advanced past the group stage since reaching the quarterfinals in 2010.
