A deadly ambush on a military-escorted civilian convoy along the Bawku–Bolgatanga route in the Upper East Region has left three civilians dead.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Binduri when unknown gunmen opened fire on the convoy transporting approximately 140 civilians from Bawku towards Bolgatanga.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the attackers targeted the convoy multiple times, resulting in the deaths of three civilians and injuries to at least one other person.

Military personnel responded swiftly, repelling the assault and killing seven assailants in the ensuing confrontation.

“In pursuit, the military discovered and retrieved from an escapee a G3 automatic rifle, two filled magazines of 20 rounds each and 176 rounds of additional ammunition,” the statement signed by Acting GAF Director of Public Relations, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin (noted in some reports as Veronica Arhin), indicated.

Security forces have arrested 10 suspects linked to the attack, who are currently assisting with investigations.

The Ghana Armed Forces has cautioned the public against interfering with ongoing military operations in the area and urged restraint as efforts continue to stabilise the volatile region.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to caution all to desist from engaging the military or any other security service during its operations,” the statement emphasised.

The military extended its condolences to the families of the deceased civilians and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
