Minority disputes Bank of Ghana’s GH¢15.6 billion loss, insists actual figure is GH¢44 billion

The Minority in Parliament has disputed the Bank of Ghana’s reported operating loss of GH¢15.6 billion for the 2025 financial year, insisting the actual loss is significantly higher.

While commending the central bank for the transparency in its public disclosure, the Minority argued that the true operating loss for 2025 stands at GH¢34.9 billion. When proceeds from gold sales are factored in, the total comprehensive loss rises to approximately GH¢44 billion.

The 2025 Annual Report and Financial Statements, which showed a deepening deficit from GH¢9.48 billion in 2024, mark the Bank of Ghana’s fourth consecutive year of losses. The bank had previously recorded deficits of GH¢60.9 billion in 2022 and GH¢10.5 billion in 2023.

At a press conference on Sunday, May 3, the Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, accused the central bank of using “artificial recognition” and “clever accounting” to shift portions of the deficit into “other comprehensive income,” thereby reducing the reported operating loss.

“The government says the loss is GH¢15.6 billion. The true operating loss of the Bank is actually GH¢34.9 billion. In fact, if you add back the GH¢9.6 billion proceeds from the gold sales, the recalculated loss is actually GH¢44 billion,” he stated.

The Minority warned that such practices could undermine confidence in the Bank of Ghana’s financial reporting and called for greater transparency in how the bank presents its accounts.
