‘Improper and unethical’ – Srem-Sai slams Dame’s criticism of NAFCO case handling

Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem-Sai has hit back at former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, describing his criticism of the withdrawal of criminal charges against the former Chief Executive of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) as misplaced.

Mr Dame, who is representing former NAFCO CEO Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, had described the Attorney General’s decision to discontinue the case as an “abuse of legal process.”

The charges against Aludiba and his wife were formally withdrawn in court on Monday, May 5, 2026, after investigators uncovered fresh evidence in the matter.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Dr Srem-Sai defended the discontinuation, insisting it followed standard criminal procedure when new evidence emerges during investigations.

“You cannot just come to court when you have fresh evidence in a criminal trial and start throwing around the evidence,” he said.

“You need to hear from the accused persons regarding the fresh evidence. That will inform your final decision whether you will charge the person or not. But to say that fresh evidence is not available merely because you don’t have it is completely improper and unethical.”

The Deputy Attorney General maintained that the prosecution remains confident in its case.

“We are still confident that we have a strong case against the accused person, there is no doubt about that,” he stated.

He explained that the fresh evidence requires further interrogation of the accused to determine whether it will lead to new charges or strengthen the existing case.

“It is part of criminal procedure to do that whenever you have fresh evidence. I don’t know why this has become an issue for the former Attorney General, who should know better, to be lamenting across the media, making the same point,” Dr Srem-Sai added.
