The Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has clarified that the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, was on a private visit to the United Kingdom when he was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Midday News on Wednesday, May 13, Mr Dafeamekpor dismissed earlier reports suggesting that the MP was en route to the United States on a Delta Airlines flight.
“That is most inaccurate,” he stated. “The Honourable Member was on a private visit to the United Kingdom. He has a family there — his wife and children live in London — and he does frequent the UK.”
The Chief Whip added that Mr Frimpong was travelling on a KLM flight at the time of the incident. “As the Chief Whip, I can confirm that this was another private visit to the UK,” he emphasised, noting that the trip was purely personal and unrelated to official parliamentary duties.
Parliament had earlier confirmed the detention of the Asante Akyem North MP. A statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, said the Rt Hon Speaker and leadership of the House had been informed of the matter and were liaising with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague for more details.
