Constitutional Review: Cabinet meets today to finalise government position

President John Dramani Mahama will today, Thursday, May 14, chair a special Cabinet meeting to consider the government’s official position on the recommendations of the Constitutional Review Committee.

Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that a comprehensive draft position paper has already been prepared following a detailed review of the committee’s report by the Attorney-General and the President’s legal team.

According to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, President Mahama had earlier directed that the report be thoroughly studied to inform the government’s response to the various proposals submitted by the review committee. That exercise has now been completed.

“So Thursday, 14th May, there will be a special cabinet session chaired by the president himself to consider the draft position paper,” he told Joy News.

He explained that the outcome of today’s Cabinet meeting will shape the government’s formal response to the constitutional review recommendations. The approved document is expected to be made public subsequently to enable Ghanaians to understand the government’s stance on the proposals.

Unlike reports from commissions of inquiry which require a White Paper, the constitutional review committee’s report will be addressed through a position paper, the spokesperson noted.

Once Cabinet approves the position paper, the government will proceed to the implementation phase, including the establishment of an implementation committee.

Kwakye Ofosu said the recommendations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, with some likely to be accepted, others modified, and some possibly rejected based on feasibility and other relevant considerations.

He added that the government will undertake further public engagement after Cabinet’s deliberations.
