Ex-police officer, accomplice sentenced to 25 years over GH¢530,000 Tamale robbery

The Tamale High Court has sentenced a former police officer and his accomplice to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour each for conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with a high-profile armed robbery incident in Tamale.

The court convicted General Corporal Suleman Ayuba Gbana, formerly of the Tamale District Police Station, and Adam Siba on July 20, 2026, after the conclusion of the trial.

The case is linked to an April 15, 2020 armed robbery attack on two foreign exchange dealers, Issahaku Sumaila and Baba Fuseini, at the entrance of the then Mum Hotel along the Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway.

The assailants reportedly shot the two men and made away with GH¢530,000 in cash, alongside other foreign currencies.

Investigations by the Northern Regional Police Command later linked Gbana to the robbery syndicate after an arrested suspect identified him as a member of the group.

A search conducted at Gbana’s residence resulted in the recovery of a Ghana Police Service pistol, 10 rounds of ammunition, three pairs of handcuffs and a brown handbag.

According to the police, the pistol had been issued to Gbana during a previous assignment as a police bodyguard, but he unlawfully retained it after being reassigned.

Gbana was arrested on April 23, 2020, and was subsequently interdicted by the Ghana Police Service while the case went through the judicial process.

Meanwhile, the court acquitted and discharged a third accused person, Mohammed Iddrisu, on all charges.

The court also ordered that the pistol and ammunition presented as exhibits during the trial be returned to the Ghana Police Service.
