‘Dr Bawumia is my friend and will continue to be my friend’ – Kusi Boateng

The Founder and Leader of Power Chapel Worldwide, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, has insisted that his friendship with former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, will continue despite criticism of their relationship.

Rev. Kusi Boateng said he would not hide or distance himself from Dr Bawumia or his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia, because of what others think about their friendship.

“I don’t care whoever thinks about it. Dr Bawumia is my friend and will continue to be my friend. I will not hide. I am not a hypocrite,” he said.

Speaking to his congregation in a video circulating on social media, he also said he was prepared to face imprisonment rather than end his friendship with the former Vice President.

“If for this reason, anybody wants to imprison me, go ahead,” he said.

“Prison is not for animals. It is for human beings. I have been there. I didn’t die. I came back,” he added.

Rev. Kusi Boateng described Dr Bawumia and Hajia Samira as close friends and family, saying he had no reason to apologise for maintaining the relationship.

His comments come amid his previous association with controversies surrounding the National Cathedral project, where he served as Secretary to the Board of Trustees.

The project has been subjected to investigations and audits by institutions including the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Deloitte and PwC.

The National Cathedral Secretariat was dissolved by President John Dramani Mahama in May 2025, while legal steps were subsequently initiated to dissolve the Board of Trustees.

A Deloitte audit covering the Secretariat’s operations between 2021 and 2023 identified financial and procurement irregularities. Government subsequently directed the Auditor-General to commission a broader forensic audit of the project.

Attorney-General Dr Dominic Ayine said in January 2026 that his office could not proceed with any prosecution relating to the National Cathedral until it received the forensic audit report.

Rev. Kusi Boateng has also been involved in legal disputes arising from allegations made by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa concerning his role in the project.

In March 2026, the Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal filed by Rev. Kusi Boateng against Mr Ablakwa, holding that the MP’s statements were grounded in truth and served the public interest. The court also awarded GH¢40,000 in costs against him.

The dispute followed Mr Ablakwa’s 2023 petition to CHRAJ concerning allegations including conflict of interest, multiple identities and financial impropriety.

CHRAJ subsequently found no evidence that Rev. Kusi Boateng had been issued a second passport under the name Kusi Boateng, although it recommended further investigation into procurement-related matters involving the National Cathedral Board of Trustees.
