Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Manhyia South Member of Parliament and lawyer for social commentator Salomey Baffoe, has explained his decision to flee the Accra High Court premises during an attempted arrest by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
According to Baffour Awuah, a woman who identified herself as an EOCO official approached him and sought to take him into custody but allegedly failed to provide evidence of her identity or authority to arrest him.
He said he offered to drive himself to the EOCO office but the woman rejected the proposal and insisted that he use an EOCO vehicle.
Baffour Awuah said his concerns deepened when the woman was also unable to produce an arrest warrant after he requested to see one.
“It became obvious to me that it was one of the recent kidnappings that have been going on, which is sponsored by the state,” he alleged.
He said he subsequently decided to drive away from the scene to protect himself, citing his responsibilities to his constituents, the Minority Caucus, his family and his client.
“And that is why I had to run. I had to drive to safety. I’ve come to Parliament and then my colleagues are behind me and I thank them very much,” he said while speaking to the press on Wednesday, September 23.
EOCO has since confirmed that its officers attempted to arrest Baffour Awuah in connection with an ongoing investigation. The Office said the MP had previously been invited twice in February 2026 to assist with the investigation but did not honour the invitations.
EOCO said the attempted arrest was not completed after the situation escalated and officers assessed that further action could endanger public safety.
The incident occurred after proceedings in the bail application of Baffoe, who is facing a charge of abetment of crime in connection with alleged publication of false information linked to the “Ghana Jollof” TikTok account.
The High Court subsequently adjourned the bail hearing to September 24 after the prosecution requested additional time to respond to the bail application.
