Sao Payment Global Limited, a financial technology company founded in São Tomé and Príncipe, has officially commenced operations in Ghana as part of its expansion across Africa.

The company launched its Ghana operations on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra, positioning Ghana as its hub for Anglophone West Africa and a key junction in its planned international payments network.

Sao currently operates in five markets: Ghana, São Tomé and Príncipe, Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia. It says it is also pursuing expansion into Rwanda, Tanzania and three other markets, with a target of reaching 10 markets by the end of 2026.

The company offers the Sao Wallet, which allows users to send and receive money, pay bills, buy airtime, make QR payments and conduct cash-in and cash-out transactions through agents.

It is also introducing Group Savings Wallets for susu groups, families, churches and associations, alongside Sao Agent, an agent network with a live map showing nearby agents and their operating status.

Sao said Ghana will serve as a key point for payment corridors connecting Africa with Europe, the Gulf and North America, as it pursues its longer-term ambition of establishing a unified wallet system across Africa by 2030.

The company said it is committed to transparent pricing, customer protection and regulatory compliance, while targeting greater participation by first-time formal financial users, women and young people.
