The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES), ahead of the October 16 deadline agreed between the government and teacher unions.

In a press release dated October 15, 2026, the department said 49,725 teachers received their payments on October 15 alongside their October salaries, while another 6,278 teachers were paid in September.

The payments cover salary adjustments and arrears dating back to January 1, 2026, arising from the teachers’ promotions.

The deadline was agreed at a meeting between government representatives and teacher unions at the Ministry of Education on October 2, 2026, to address the payment of outstanding promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears.

Despite the payments, thousands of promoted teachers are still awaiting the processing of their records or the resolution of issues identified during verification.

According to CAGD, of the approximately 80,000 teachers reported to have been promoted, the GES had processed and submitted supporting documents for 56,633.

CAGD said it verified and paid 56,003 of those cases, while 630 remained pending due to issues identified during its verification process.

The department said it was awaiting the resolution of the outstanding issues by the GES before the affected teachers could be paid.

A further 23,367 promoted teachers are yet to have their cases processed and the relevant supporting documents submitted by the GES.

CAGD said it had therefore completed payments for all teachers whose submitted records met the requirements for inclusion on the payroll.

It added that it remained committed to processing outstanding eligible payments promptly once the necessary corrections had been made or complete and accurate documents had been received and verified.

The department also thanked the GES, teacher unions and the participating ministries and agencies for their cooperation in facilitating the payments.

The development follows concerns over delays in the payment of promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to teachers, with the government and teacher unions agreeing on October 16, 2026, as the deadline for completing the payments.
