The Registration of Sim cards came with backlash and lawsuits however the exercise has been duly undertaken and the deadline also extinct.

This morning, MP for Ablekuma West Constituency who doubles as the Minister for Communication and Digitalization, Hon. Ursula Owusu Ekuful disclosed that, Phones that are imported into the courty cannot be unlocked and decoded following an exercise to combat phone related thefts.

In an interview on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ morning show, she said the Ministry is now registering phones that hosts registered Sim Card. Hence once you fit your sim into a new device, you will receive a notification to try register the Phone hosting the sim.

“The devices have a unique number so If you put your sim in a new phone, they will give you the notification that you are using this number on a new device so download……every phone you are using they know every tablet your are using they know.”she said.

She further hinted that, once your phone gets missing, all you need is to place a call to the Central Equipment Indentity Registry who shall consequently block the mobile device from being accessible for use.

“We will register all the number. If your phone gets lost, just call the Central Equipment Identity registrat that your phone is missing. The phone will be blocked.” She added.

In the conversation, she divulged an important information which seems to be a blow to some phones dealers in the country. She hinted phones imported from abroad shall not be unlocked or decoded and they had engaged the stakeholders in that regard.

“We are doing it in such a way that people who import phones in Ghana cannot unlock them. You can’t unlock those phones again. It will worry those who import the phones. we called them to engage them that we are going to do such thing. We have global blacklist and grey list of stolen list.”she stated.
