NPP retains Kumawu seat

Ernest Yaw Anim, Parliamentary Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Kumawu Constituency’s by-election has won by 70.9% after he polled 15,264, hence retaining the seat for the NPP.

The highly expected Kumawu by-election which raised tensions, witnessed political vote buying, an unexpected development and heavy deployment of Police has ended and the voters choice has elected NPP candidate Ernest Yaw Anim as the new Member of Parliament elect for the constituency in the stead of the late Philip Basoah.

The by-election which was marked to be a close race between the NPP and the opposition candidate Akwasi Amankwah as well as the daring support gannered by the strongest independent candidate Kwaku Duah proved otherwise at the end.

After the collation of votes casted in the 75 polling station across the constituency from an expected 34,000 voters, Ernest Yaw Anim has been handed the balton by his constituents after he polled a whopping 15,264 representing 70.9% which has silenced the narratives of a too close to call election.

The National Democratic Congress’ candidate, Akwasi Amankwah who was adjudged by many to be a contender for Ernest Yaw Anim finished second as he inadequately polled 3,723 which represent 17.29%. of the valid votes casted.

The two independent candidates who bear the same name Kwaku Duah, bore the same fate in the election as they recorded lower votes of 2, 478 and 62 respectively which respresented 11.8%.

Party sympathizers of the ruling NPP thronged the streets and polling centres of Kumawu in jubilation ahead of the official announcement of the votes collated by the Electoral Commission.

After about 30% of the certified results were announced, the NPP started singing songs of victory and arrayed in white to celebrate Ernest Yaw Anim’s victory ahead of the announcement.

The New Patriotic Party has therefore retained the Kumawu seat for 28 years continous and it’s candidate will continue the business of the late MP for the constituency.

The seat became vacant following the death of NPP’s Member of Parliament for the constituency, Philip Basoah, .
