AFCON 2023: Chris Hughton sacked as Black Stars Coach following abysmal Afcon Showdown

Ghana Football Association has relieved coach Chris Hughton of his duties following the Black Stars elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group stage.

The Black Stars secured two points in Group B, drawing 2-2 with Egypt and Mozambique, and suffering a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde in their opening match.

Despite initial aspirations to advance as one of the best-ranked third-placed teams, Ghana’s hopes were dashed on Tuesday due to unfavorable results. Hughton, who took on the role of Ghana’s head coach in February the previous year, is no longer at the helm.

Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect,” a Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Statement from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said.

“The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Hughton, the former manager of Newcastle United and Brighton, took on the role of technical adviser for the four-time continental champions in February 2022.

He assumed the managerial position from Otto Addo, who resigned after Ghana’s disappointing performance in the 2022 World Cup, finishing at the bottom of Group H with one win from three matches.

Ghana also faced group-stage exits in the 2021 Afcon finals in Cameroon and a similar fate in Ivory Coast.
