Lali X Lola petition Sam George to intervene in Boomplay’s alleged non-payment of streaming revenue.

Award Winning Ghanaian musical duo, Lali X Lola, have petitioned the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George over concerns of allegedly not receiving revenue from Boomplay, a Digital Service Provider (DSP) that streams and sells music and video content since April 2023.

In an address to the Minister, the twins stated bemoaned the streaming platform’s unresponsiveness and nonpayment of their revenue due. They noted that their efforts to resolve the issue have been unsuccessful, raising serious questions about transparency and accountability within the platform.

“Despite repeated attempts to engage the platform to resolve this issue, there has been consistent unresponsiveness and nonpayment, which raises serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and fair compensation for Ghanaian artists,” they said.

While Lali X Lola acknowledged Boomplay’s role in promoting and supporting artists, they criticized the platform’s failure to meet its basic obligations, including timely payments. They argued that such negligence amounts to the exploitation of artists.

They further explained that making and promoting music requires substantial effort and financial investment, often borne by the artists themselves. “Making and promoting music is neither easy nor inexpensive. It takes time, effort, and significant financial investment—often from the artists themselves. It is therefore unjust and disheartening when musicians are denied revenue for their work,” they added.

The duo appealed to the minister to investigate the matter and ensure that all regulations are enforced. They expressed hope that under his leadership, measures would be implemented to protect and fairly compensate artists in the digital space.

Lali X Lola earned nomination for the TGMA Best New Artist of the Year, with other artists Rap Fada, AratheJay, Team Eternity, Kwesi Amewuga, Beeztrap KOTMIn 2024, they won the 3Music Emerging Woman of the Year category.
