The Government of Ghana has announced that a state funeral for the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, will be held on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Independence Square in Accra.

The announcement, issued under the auspices of President John Dramani Mahama, was made in a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.

”The Government of Ghana, under the auspices of President John Dramani Mahama, will hold a state funeral for the Late Former First Lady, Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings on Friday, 28th November, 2025 at the Independence Square.

“The state funeral is in recognition of Mrs. Rawlings’ invaluable contributions to the advancement of the rights of women and children in Ghana, and national development,” the statement dated November 6, 2025 said

Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, who passed away on October 23, 2025, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra at the age of 76 after a brief illness, served as First Lady during her husband Jerry John Rawlings’ presidency from 1979 to 2001.

She founded the 31st December Women’s Movement, which empowered millions of women through literacy, health, and economic programs, and led Ghana’s early ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991.

In 2016, she made history as the first woman to run for president under the National Democratic Party.

The announcement follows a one-week commemoration of her passing on October 30, 2025, and a formal notification to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on November 3, 2025.
