The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that approximately 3,000 residents of Odawna, a suburb of Accra, have been displaced following torrential rains on Sunday, May 18, that triggered severe flooding.
According to Hendrick Noble Kinnah, NADMO Director for the Korle Klottey Municipality, the floods submerged homes and businesses, leaving hundreds of families stranded and in urgent need of assistance.
During assessment exercises held on Monday, May 19, in affected areas, Mr. Kinnah provided an update on the situation, noting that a comprehensive report had been compiled to inform the next steps in recovery and intervention.
“About 3,000 households have been affected in the Odawna community. We started the assessment yesterday and went through all the flooded areas within the municipality. Everywhere else is stable except Odawna, which remains heavily impacted. This time around, we are determined to fix it. We’ve gathered a report which will be forwarded to the administration for decisive action.”
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Korle Klottey, Nii Adjei Tawiah, called for a lasting solution to the recurring flood problem in the area.
“We’ve dealt with this challenge for years. As an Assembly, our goal now is to resolve it permanently. It’s no longer enough to walk in after each flood, sympathise with affected residents, clear debris, and hand out relief items. It’s time we addressed the root cause and fixed it once and for all.”
The flooding in Odawna has reignited calls for sustainable urban planning, improved drainage infrastructure, and proactive disaster mitigation measures.
