Afenyo-Markin sues Sammy Gyamfi, Eric Adjei, Multimedia and Peace FM for defamation over extortion claims

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sued the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, and two media organisations over statements he considers false and defamatory, particularly claims describing him as an “extortionist”.

The Effutu Member of Parliament disclosed the legal action when Parliament reconvened on Monday, August 24, 2026, following weeks of public exchanges between him and Gyamfi over GoldBod’s operations and the reported losses incurred by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).

The dispute intensified after Gyamfi accused the Minority Leader of attempting to extort GoldBod in response to his demands for explanations and accountability over the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the BoG in 2025 under the gold purchase programme.

Afenyo-Markin has subsequently commenced separate legal actions against Gyamfi, Eric Adjei, Multimedia Group Limited and Peace FM in connection with the allegations.

According to the Minority Leader, the first case, Suit Number GT/1029/2026, has been filed at the Accra High Court and is titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited.

The second case, Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, has been filed at the Achimota Circuit Court against Eric Adjei and Peace FM.

“I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin said he was confident that the courts would determine the matter on the basis of the evidence and applicable law.

“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination,” he added.

The legal action follows a protracted disagreement between the Minority Leader and the GoldBod CEO over the financial performance of the DGPP and the reported losses associated with the programme.

Afenyo-Markin has repeatedly demanded answers from the government and GoldBod regarding the reported US$1.7 billion loss, raising questions about the management of the programme and the financial implications for the central bank.

Gyamfi, however, has rejected claims that GoldBod incurred the reported losses, arguing that the financial position of the programme has been misrepresented.

The GoldBod CEO has also defended his comments about the Minority Leader and indicated that he is prepared to respond to the allegations in court.
