AG files three charges against Manhyia South MP over alleged GH¢9.85m financial loss
The Office of the Attorney-General has filed three criminal charges against Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah over alleged financial misconduct arising from transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans Company Limited.
The charges, filed at the High Court’s Specialised Jurisdiction Division in Accra on October 3, 2026, are conspiracy to commit a crime, intentionally causing financial loss to a public body and money laundering.
The MP has pleaded not guilty to all three charges.
According to the State’s case, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, who was then a senior partner at Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners, was involved in a transaction concerning a debt recovery case his firm was handling for SIC Life against Equity Savings and Loans.
The prosecution alleges that the transaction resulted in the dissipation of GH¢9.85 million belonging to SIC Life. The money laundering charge relates to an alleged GH¢1 million transfer to the then Managing Director of SIC Life in 2024.
The case stems from legal work undertaken by the MP’s former law firm to recover money owed to SIC Life by Equity Savings and Loans, which subsequently led to litigation over property attached in execution of a court judgment.
The State alleges that Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah played a role in a subsequent settlement involving the attached property and the payment of legal fees.
His lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, has rejected the allegations, maintaining that his client’s involvement arose from legitimate legal work and disputing the prosecution’s characterisation of the transaction as dissipation of funds.
The MP was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after he voluntarily surrendered on October 1, following the issuance of an arrest warrant.
He was subsequently arraigned before the High Court on October 3 and granted GH¢10 million bail with two sureties, while being ordered to make himself available to EOCO whenever required as investigations continue.
The case remains before the court, with the allegations yet to be determined.
