Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, Member of Parliament for Bantama, has called on the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, to facilitate medical support for Suzzy Penamang, the ADASS student shot in in eye, by assisting her travel to the United Kingdom for treatment and ensuring that justice is served.
Asenso-Boakye’s call for the Minister of Education’s intervention stems from the fact that the incident occurred on the premises of the school which falls under Haruna’s remit, as part of his responsibility for overseeing education in the country.
His appeal follows the family’s independent efforts to seek medical treatment abroad after Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ efforts at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital stalls.
In a Facebook post, the MP expressed deep concern after a viral video showed the 16-year-old victim, Suzzy Penamang, in tears, pleading for justice following the Twedie District Court’s decision to grant GH¢200,000 bail to the accused on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
“Just yesterday, I saw a deeply distressing video of Suzzy in tears, with her family expressing anguish over reports that the young man who shot her has been granted bail. They are calling for justice, and rightfully so,”
“Given that this incident occurred at a senior high school, I am calling on the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, to urgently intervene. I appeal to him to use his good office, not only to expedite arrangements for Suzzy’s continued treatment, but also to ensure that justice is served for her and her family,” he said.
Hon. Asenso-Boakye also revealed that efforts to secure a referral letter from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), requested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have stalled.
According to him, his engagement with KATH management indicated that obtaining the letter would be difficult due to the assessment and position of the specialist handling the case.
Despite these challenges, the victim’s family has independently arranged for Suzzy to receive treatment in the UK.
The MP noted that he has submitted the necessary medical documents and contact details of the family to the Chief Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs but has yet to receive a response.
He also provided a sponsorship letter to the UK High Commission to facilitate the visa application process.
“In the meantime, the family has independently arranged for Suzzy to receive treatment at a hospital in the UK. I have forwarded the relevant medical documents and the family’s contact information to the Chief Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but we have yet to receive a response,” he stated.
“Additionally, upon the family’s request, I have provided a letter of sponsorship addressed to the UK High Commission to support their visa application process,” he added.
Hon. Asenso-Boakye has previously supported the victim and her family by covering medical expenses at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and securing commitment from the CEO of the facility, Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah.
Suzzy Penamang was shot in the eye on the premises of ADASS during a heated argument between the accused and his peers over the functionality and integrity of a firearm. The case has since been before the Twedie District Court.
The accused was granted bail during the second hearing, after the first was postponed when the prosecutor requested leave to seek advice from the Attorney General.
