Award-winning Nigerian artist, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has recounted a heartbreaking moment when Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo boycotted a planned dinner and party with him after Manchester United lost a match some years ago.
Davido shared this experience in reaction to Inter Milan’s 4-3 extra-time victory over Barcelona at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final, a result that secured the Nerazzurri a spot in the final in Munich.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) after the match, Davido empathized with the heartbreak suffered by Barcelona fans, referencing his own disappointment from a past Manchester United loss.
Davido explained that Cristiano Ronaldo had personally invited him to Old Trafford, with plans for dinner and a party after the match. However, Manchester United lost the game, an outcome Davido blamed on a defensive blunder by centre-back Harry Maguire. Ronaldo, visibly angry, reportedly went straight home dithcing the evening’s plans
According to Davido, the incident was so disappointing that he still holds a grudge against Maguire for costing him the opportunity to spend time with the Ballon d’Or winner.
He wrote
“Football ehn fit give person BP … I remember when CR7 personally invite me come watch match for Old trafford then couple years ago … He don book dinner ALL! Party chillin etc …. Nah so dem go lose match .. BABA VEX GO HOUSE .. since that day I still never forgive Maguire”
A staunch fan of Ronaldo, Davido has made several trips to Old Trafford to watch the legendary forward play—especially after his return to Manchester United from Juventus. One notable occasion was United’s 3-2 comeback win against Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League group stage on October 20, 2021. Ronaldo scored a brace that night, and Davido’s presence was acknowledged on the club’s official social media channels.
Meanwhile, Barcelona failed to reach the Champions League final after Davide Frattesi’s goal in the 99th minute of extra time ended their campaign. Despite a spirited comeback capped by Raphinha’s 88th-minute strike to make it 3-2, Francesco Acerbi’s equalizer deep into stoppage time forced the game into extra time, where Inter sealed their victory
