Team Lead of reputable online news portal The 1957 News, Nene Odompleh, has voiced concern over the rising trend of indiscriminate content poaching within the new media space.
He raised this concerns after filing multiple copyright violation complains across social media platforms where some bloggers cover his watermark when they use his contents.
Speaking on Thursday as a panelist on TV3’s The Afternoon Show, Odompleh highlighted the growing nuisance of social media bloggers reposting content from blogs and news websites without crediting from the rightful owners.
He shed light on evolving tactics used by content poachers, including the concealment of original watermarks to claim ownership. “Some people take our video and cover our watermark. We wake up at dawn, we go to cover it—sometimes we spend money, we book flights, we do everything we can to go get the content,” he stated.
Odompleh emphasized that visibility is a crucial part of their work and called on bloggers to put an end to such unethical practices. “The best you can do is to post without giving us credit; leave our watermark because the visibility is important to us.” he said.
