Former Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party in the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed his condolences to the Catholic community in Ghana and around the world following the passing of Pope Francis.

In a post on X, he eulogized the leadership of the late Pope, highlighting his compassion, humility, and inclusivity.

“The late Pope was a man of unwavering peace and compassion. He lived a life of inclusiveness and humility, which was admired by many around the world,” he stated.

He further reminisced about his visit to the Vatican a year ago, describing their meeting as one that “left a remarkable impression on me as one whose true essence and outlook on life was to live pure and right.”

Dr. Bawumia visited the Pope in the “Auletta,” or small study, of the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall on April 24, 2024.He held a significant discussion with the Pope on matters pertaining to Ghana’s political and socio-economic situation, particularly regarding collaboration in the fields of education and healthcare, as well as strengthening diplomatic ties between Ghana and the Vatican City.

Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 at his residence in Casa Santa Marta in the early hours of today, at 7:35 a.m.

The Vatican confirmed his passing following a bout of bronchitis and pneumonia, which had hospitalized him in February 2025.
