The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has explained why its officers were unable to arrest the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, during an operation on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
EOCO said its officers were acting in the lawful discharge of their statutory responsibilities when they attempted to arrest the MP in connection with an ongoing investigation.
The Office said the MP had previously been invited on two occasions in February 2026 to assist with the investigation but did not honour the invitations.
According to EOCO, the attempted arrest subsequently escalated, and officers assessed that taking further action would have endangered public safety. The officers therefore did not complete the arrest.
EOCO said it is aware that Baffour Awuah later went to the precincts of Parliament to seek sanctuary, despite Parliament being on recess.
The Office said it respects the constitutional privileges and immunities of Members of Parliament and would ensure that its operations remain within the Constitution and applicable laws.
It added that the circumstances surrounding the incident, including available video evidence, would be carefully reviewed to guide its next steps.
EOCO maintained that parliamentary membership does not automatically terminate an investigation or place an individual beyond the reach of the law.
The investigation, it said, remains active.
