GFA, Carlos Queiroz part ways after Black Stars’ recent AFCON qualifying defeats
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz have mutually agreed to terminate his service agreement following discussions between the two parties.
The GFA announced the decision in a statement issued on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
The circumstances surrounding the termination were not fully disclosed, although the announcement comes after the Black Stars suffered defeats in their recent 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches.
Ghana lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire before suffering a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in their most recent qualifying fixtures.
In a statement, Queiroz said both parties agreed that ending their professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action under the circumstances.
“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” he said.
The Portuguese coach thanked the GFA, particularly its President, for the trust placed in him and the opportunity to lead the national team.
He said he arrived in Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and contribute to the development of the country’s football talent.
“Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” Queiroz said.
He also expressed appreciation to his technical staff and others who supported the team, particularly during preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz paid tribute to the Black Stars players and urged Ghanaians to continue supporting the team.
“Believe in these players. Protect them. Support them,” he said.
“The talent and potential are there. With unity, support and the right environment, this generation can achieve great things for Ghana.”
Queiroz thanked Ghanaians and Black Stars supporters for their passion and support, saying he would leave with “respect, gratitude and pride.”
