A fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) Substation Switchyard in Akosombo has caused significant disruption to electricity transmission, leading to power outages in several parts of the country.

The incident occurred around 2:01 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2026, prompting an immediate response from emergency teams.

In a press statement, GRIDCo confirmed that the fire impacted power generation and transmission operations within the national grid. The company has since deployed emergency response teams to the scene, who are working round the clock to contain the situation and restore stability.

Technical experts are currently conducting a comprehensive assessment to determine the full extent of the damage and the necessary steps for full restoration of normal power supply.

“GRIDCo wishes to assure the public that our engineers are working assiduously to stabilise the system and minimise the impact of the disruption,” the statement read.

The company emphasised that restoring reliable power supply remains its top priority and urged the public to remain calm, noting that the situation is under control.

GRIDCo added that it will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
