The Education Minister has directed the immediate suspension of Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Education, the directive follows an investigation by JoyNews and Manasseh Azure Awuni into the allegations, which has yet to be aired.

In the statement signed by its Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, the Ministry emphasised that teachers are entrusted with the responsibility of protecting and safeguarding students, rather than abusing the trust placed in them by parents and guardians.

The Ministry said the Minister had directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately suspend Abdulai pending a thorough investigation into the allegations.

It added that the Ministry and the GES remained committed to ensuring that misconduct of this nature was not tolerated in educational institutions across the country.

The Minister has also called on the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the allegations.
