Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer for 2028, has warned state officials of impending accountability over what he describes as an “unholy collaboration” between the Executive, state security agencies, and elements in the judiciary.
In a statement released on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Dr Bawumia expressed deep concern about the arrests and detentions of NPP members and supporters since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government took office on January 7, 2025.
He specifically cited the recent arrest and detention of NPP organiser David Essandoh for a social media comment on the return of dumsor, as well as the detention of NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe (Abronye).
“The actions undermine free speech and are setting Ghana’s democracy backwards,” the NPP flagbearer stated.
Dr Bawumia condemned what he termed “the unholy collaboration between the Executive, State investigative agencies, and some elements within the judiciary to use intimidation and harassment to silence members of the New Patriotic Party.”
“I, therefore, serve notice to officers of the State who are active participants in this unholy enterprise that the day of accountability will come and the abuse of State power will be accounted for” he added.
