TOR targets production of 45,000 barrels per day

The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) is set to significantly boost its production capacity to 45,000 barrels per stream day as part of renewed efforts to revitalise the facility and strengthen its contribution to Ghana’s petroleum sector.

Currently operating at 28,000 barrels per stream day, the refinery is undertaking technical transitional procedures to integrate an additional processing unit, known as the F61 unit, which will operate alongside the existing F1 unit.

Both units will be connected to the refinery’s crude distillation system, enabling improved efficiency and a substantial increase in overall output once the integration process is completed.

TOR Corporate Affairs Officer, Godwin Mahama Ayaba, disclosed these developments during an interview on Citi FM on Monday, March 9.

He explained that since resuming production, the refinery has been operating under a tolling arrangement, where private companies supply crude oil to the facility for processing. TOR charges a processing fee and returns the refined petroleum products to the suppliers, who then handle the marketing and distribution of the finished products.

Mr Ayaba noted that while the refinery’s current nameplate capacity stands at 28,000 barrels per stream day, the successful commissioning of the F61 unit will raise output to 45,000 barrels per stream day.

He further revealed that management is already considering medium-term plans to expand capacity even further, potentially reaching around 60,000 barrels per stream day.
