Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Naser Toure Mahama, has formally declared her intention to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries ahead of the by-election to fill the vacant seat.

In a press release issued on January 22, 2026, Hajia Amina expressed profound grief over the sudden passing of her husband on January 4, 2026, describing him as not only a spouse but a leader to her and their children who instilled values of respect for humanity and gratitude to the Almighty.

She highlighted the overwhelming support and affection shown to her family by the community.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank them for the support. My children and I cannot repay this show of love but to ask Allah to bless each and everyone of you,” she stated.

Responding to persistent calls from constituents, including elders, grassroots members, chiefs, imams, and the youth, Hajia Amina announced her acceptance to vie for the parliamentary seat on the NDC ticket.

“I have pondered over the calls from well-meaning members of the constituency, especially the elders and grassroots and in so doing I accept the call to serve my people,” she said.

She emphasized the difficulty of the moment but affirmed her commitment to heed the counsel of her people.

“Though it’s a difficult time for me now, I can’t but to listen and accept the wise counsel of my people to lead and serve,” she added.

Hajia Amina pledged to continue her late husband’s legacy, particularly his “Reset agenda” aimed at transforming lives in the constituency.

As a mother concerned for children, the poor, vulnerable, widows, orphans, and unemployed youth, she stated, “I have a duty to step in that big shoes of my late husband to continue the journey and legacy of transforming lives.”

The Electoral Commission (EC) declared the Ayawaso East seat vacant following the MP’s death and scheduled a by-election for March 3, 2026.

The NDC has set February 7, 2026, for its parliamentary primaries to select a candidate for the poll, with nominations and related processes underway.

Naser Toure Mahama, who represented the constituency since 2013, won the seat in four consecutive elections, including the 2024 polls where he secured 70.85% of the votes.
