Basic routines of school life such as using the washroom, taking meals and attending lessons are becoming a challenge for students of Peki Senior High Technical School (PESTECH) due to inadequate and deteriorating infrastructure.
An investigative visit by The1957News to the school found an open enclosure serving as a bathroom for a boys’ population of 964, as well as a rudimentary pit latrine covered with logs and screened with mosquito nets, offering little more than a fragile sense of privacy. The school is also grappling with dilapidated classroom facilities and a dining area where the available furniture appears insufficient for the number of students it serves.
With a current student population of 1,131 following the completion of the Form Three cohort, the situation remains pressing ahead of the admission of a new cohort in September.
Inadequate sanitation and ageing facilities are making proper hygiene difficult to maintain while exposing students to avoidable health and safety risks.
The impact is already being felt in the daily lives of the school community, with the conditions affecting students’ comfort, concentration and participation in academic activities.
