The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced that approximately 200 transformers have been installed across the country this month as part of a major nationwide programme to upgrade and replace ageing units in Ghana’s power distribution network.
Addressing the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, April 27, Jinapor stated that the initiative aims to improve voltage stability and deliver a more reliable electricity supply to consumers amid rising demand.
He explained that the new transformers are of higher capacity, shifting from the commonly used 20 KVA units to more robust 30 KVA and above systems.
“Government is addressing this issue head-on by implementing a nationwide transformer upgrade and replacement programme. As an immediate intervention, this month alone, we have installed almost 200 transformers,” the Minister said.
Jinapor added that the deployment of these high-capacity transformers is being prioritised at key primary supply stations to boost voltage levels in critical areas.
He cited Adenta, Lashibi, and Teshie-Nungua as among the locations that have already benefited from the installations, stressing that the upgrades in these areas can be independently verified by residents and stakeholders.
The ongoing exercise forms part of efforts to ease pressure on overstretched infrastructure and enhance the overall stability of power distribution nationwide. The government plans to replace and upgrade up to 2,500 ageing transformers under the programme.
