The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed the arrest of a 21-year-old man, Azumah Sampson, who allegedly stabbed a firefighter while personnel were battling a fire at Adjiringanor in Accra last Friday.
The incident happened when fire crews were responding to a blaze that engulfed parts of a two-storey, eight-room house near Ability Square in the Adjiringanor area.
During the operation, one firefighter sustained serious stab wounds after being attacked by the suspect.
In a statement issued on Monday, the GNFS revealed that its officers, in collaboration with other security agencies, tracked Azumah Sampson for several days before apprehending him.
The suspect has since been handed over to the Ghana Police Service and is currently assisting with investigations.
The GNFS condemned the attack on its personnel, describing it as unacceptable and a threat to the safety of firefighters who risk their lives to protect lives and property.
The Service assured the public that it will pursue the matter to ensure justice is served while urging citizens to cooperate with emergency responders during operations.
Investigations into the motive behind the stabbing are ongoing.
