7 Arrested as EOCO cracks down on Nigerian cyber fraud syndicate at Afienya-Mataheko

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has dismantled a Nigerian-led cyber fraud ring operating from Mataheko-Afienya in the Greater Accra Region, rescuing seven trafficked victims in the process.

The raid, carried out on Friday, November 14, 2025, formed part of EOCO’s ongoing anti-human trafficking and cybercrime initiative dubbed “Operation LIFELINE”.

According to a release by EOCO, ten Nigerian nationals were taken into custody during the operation – three prime suspects and seven victims who had been trafficked into Ghana under the pretext of legitimate employment.

Investigators revealed that the victims, aged between 17 and 30, were lured from Nigeria with promises of decent jobs, only to be held in exploitative conditions and forced to participate in large-scale online fraud schemes.

Authorities seized several laptops, mobile phones, and other electronic devices believed to have been used in the criminal enterprise.

EOCO has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities through its dedicated hotlines or other law enforcement channels.

The agency also issued a strong caution to property owners, advising them to thoroughly vet foreign nationals before renting premises, as some properties are being used as safe havens for organised crime.

“EOCO will continue to pursue and prosecute individuals and syndicates engaged in cybercrime and human trafficking without fear or favour,” a statement from the Office read.

The suspects are currently in custody assisting with investigations, while arrangements are underway to provide support and repatriation for the rescued victims.
