The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has disclosed that a fire outbreak at the Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region damaged a critical transmission system with a capacity of about 720 megawatts.
According to the ministry’s Spokesperson and Head of Communications, Richmond Rockson, the affected system accounts for nearly 70% of the power transmission capacity linked to the Akosombo Dam.
The fire, which broke out on Thursday, April 23, 2026, destroyed key components within the substation. The impact extended to other transmission points across the country, triggering power outages in several areas.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, April 24, Mr Rockson described the incident as a major setback to the national power system.
“The system that got affected was about 720 megawatts,” he said, adding, “That system transmits power to major parts of the country, so this is a significant hit. The Akosombo Dam generates a little over 1,000 megawatts.”
He noted that the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, is expected to visit the substation to obtain first-hand information on the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has launched a full investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
