Respect for the Ghana cedi has returned – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Ministry of Finance for their effective management of the currency, noting that the Ghanaian cedi has regained respect both domestically and internationally under their stewardship.

The President made the remarks on Monday, November 18, 2025, during the Cedi@60 commemoration organised by the Bank of Ghana in Accra under the theme “Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”

Addressing the gathering, President Mahama expressed gratitude to the central bank’s leadership and staff as well as officials at the Ministry of Finance for stabilising the national currency.

“I just want to say that the Governor and all your team at the BoG, the Ministry of Finance – Ghanaians are grateful to you for the management of our currency,” he stated.

Highlighting the renewed confidence in the cedi, the President said, “I think that a lot of respect has returned to our currency.”

He urged the authorities to sustain the policies that have contributed to the currency’s stability.

“It’s my hope that you will keep whatever you are doing to make sure that we don’t have excess liquidity – all those words you people have; open market operations, whatever – those your technical jargons,” President Mahama said.

“Whatever you are doing, continue doing so, so that the cedi is respected,” he added.

The Cedi@60 celebration marks 60 years since Ghana introduced its own currency on July 19, 1965, replacing the Ghanaian pound and symbolising the country’s economic independence and resilience.
