A 34-year-old driver’s mate learning to drive has caused the death of a 40-year-old mother of four, Gladys Mensah, at Assin Fosu in the Central Region.
According to a Graphic report, the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, around 11:00 a.m. near the SDA School at Habitat, a suburb of Assin Fosu.
Police say Eric Ackon, the learner driver, was being taught how to drive a Hyundai truck with registration number GR 6146-12 by the vehicle’s owner, Benjamin Kwarfo, 26, when he lost control due to inexperience.
The truck veered off the road, struck Gladys Mensah who was hawking second-hand clothes and boxer shorts by the roadside, dragged her several metres, and finally crashed into a nearby house, causing significant structural damage.
Eyewitnesses described a horrific scene, with the victim suffering severe head injuries and bleeding profusely.
She was rushed to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Both the learner driver, Eric Ackon, and the supervising driver, Benjamin Kwarfo, have been arrested by the Assin Fosu Police to assist with investigations. The truck has also been impounded.
Briefing the media, Central North Regional MTTD Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, confirmed the arrests and said the matter is under active investigation.
The body of Gladys Mensah has been deposited at the St. Francis Xavier Hospital morgue pending autopsy.
