President John Dramani Mahama has approved a two-year contract extension for Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, allowing him to remain in office until December 2027.

According to a 3news report, the approval, contained in a letter dated Tuesday, November 25, 2025 and signed by Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, takes effect from December 28, 2025 – the date the IGP was originally due to proceed on statutory retirement.

The letter states that the decision follows a recommendation by the Police Council and is in line with provisions governing the administration of the Ghana Police Service.

“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic, has approved your re-engagement for an additional two (2) years… During this period, you shall continue to serve as the Inspector-General of Police and discharge the duties and responsibilities attached to the office,” the letter read in part.

The Police Council cited the need to sustain ongoing reforms, enhance operational effectiveness, and maintain stability within the Service as key reasons for recommending the extension.

IGP Yohuno, a career officer with over 40 years of service, was appointed Inspector-General of Police by President Mahama on March 13, 2025, and sworn in the following day, March 14, 2025, replacing Dr George Akuffo Dampare.

Prior to his elevation, he served as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, a role he assumed in July 2024 under the previous administration.

He has previously held positions including Director-General of Operations, Director-General of the Police Intelligence Directorate, and Greater Accra Regional Commander.

The IGP has been directed to formally accept the re-engagement in writing within three days of receiving the letter.
