Ghana is better because Nana Konadu lived – NDC pays tribute to former First Lady

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has honoured the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, as a fearless trailblazer whose life profoundly transformed Ghana, especially for women and marginalised communities.

Delivering the party’s tribute at her state funeral on Friday, November 28, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey described her as a foundational pillar of both the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and the NDC.

“We bow to honour a woman whose life changed the course of our nation. She was the embodiment of boldness, fighting especially for women whose voices had often been ignored,” Mr Kwetey said.

He praised her establishment of the 31st December Women’s Movement as one of the boldest leadership acts in Ghana’s history, saying it became a nationwide engine that empowered countless women, restored their dignity and nurtured grassroots leadership.

Mr Kwetey also highlighted her instrumental role in the passage of the Intestate Succession Law – popularly known as the “Nana Konadu Law” – which protected widows from disinheritance and homelessness.

“She stood between widows and injustice, fighting to ensure that no woman was left homeless or powerless in her darkest hour,” he stated.

The NDC General Secretary stressed that the party’s history cannot be told without recognising her indispensable contribution, adding that she became the first woman in Ghana to contest for the presidency.

“Her legacy lives on in every confident girl who walks into a classroom, every widow empowered by law and dignity, every woman who now knows she can lead,” he declared.

Concluding the tribute, Mr Kwetey said: “Your fire continues to inspire a new generation unafraid to be bold. On behalf of the NDC, we thank you for your service, courage, and the lives you uplifted. Rest well, mother of the movement. Ghana is better because you lived.”
