Parliament on Holdup as Minority insists on recall of Kpandai seat vacancy declaration

Proceedings in Parliament have temporarily halted following a demand by the Minority Caucus for the recall of a letter from the Clerk of Parliament to the Electoral Commission, which had declared the Kpandai seat as vacant.

The disruption began at the commencement of sitting on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, when the Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, read a statement on the floor articulating the Caucus’s demands. Following his statement, the Minority side erupted into spontaneous chanting, which prompted the First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, to suspend the sitting.

When the House resumed, Speaker Alban Bagbin took over the chair and sought to give the floor to the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, for a status briefing. However, this attempt was fiercely resisted by the Minority, who broke into another round of spontaneous chanting, with some attacks explicitly directed at the Clerk of Parliament. After over 20 minutes of continuous chants from the Minority, the Speaker suspended the sitting once again.

Speaking to The1957News on the matter, the Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho, Nana Asafo-Agyei Aye, accused the Clerk of Parliament of issuing the letter to the Electoral Commission behind the Speaker’s back, allegedly contrary to an earlier ruling by the Speaker.

He affirmed that the Minority would fiercely resist any attempt to remove the sitting Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam, from the House until the final ruling by the Court of Appeal. Nyindam is challenging a High Court ruling that declared his victory in the 2024 parliamentary election as null and void. The MP warned that the Minority would allow no further business until the letter declaring the vacancy is recalled and the underlying matter resolved.
