4 dead in bee attacks at Akatsi

At least four persons, including two pupils, have died in two separate bee attacks in the Anloga and Akatsi North Districts of the Volta Region within a week.

The most recent incident occurred on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at the E.P. Basic School in Anloga, where a swarm of bees attacked pupils and teachers, resulting in the deaths of two young learners.

The victims were identified as Theodora Amewovi, aged 9, and Michael Kumeko, aged 4. Both died shortly after being stung multiple times.

According to the Assemblyman for the area, Johnson Bokovi, the attack happened around 10:30 a.m. during break time when pupils were playing football. The ball got stuck in a nearby tree where the bees were nesting, and attempts to retrieve it by throwing stones disturbed the swarm.

The bees stung several pupils, teachers, and the headmaster. Two other pupils—a boy and a girl—were rushed to the Keta Municipal Hospital. As of Thursday, December 18, 2025, the girl had been discharged, while the boy remained under treatment.

An earlier incident on Saturday, December 13, 2025, around Avega in the Akatsi North District claimed the lives of two adults. One victim, a woman, died on her farm after being attacked by bees, while an elderly woman believed to be in her early 80s succumbed hours later at the hospital.

The grieving parents of Theodora Amewovi described their devastation over the sudden loss of their daughter in an interview with 3News.

Meanwhile, the Assemblyman confirmed that efforts were underway as of Thursday to destroy the beehive to prevent further incidents before pupils return to school in January.
