Fire Service launches investigation into assault on journalist by officers

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched an internal investigation into a viral video circulating on social media, which allegedly depicts its personnel assaulting a civilian, amid claims that the individual is a journalist.

In a press release dated Monday, January 5, 2026, GNFS stated that it has taken note of the video showing yet-to-be-identified fire personnel in an altercation with a civilian whose identity has not been established.

The Service confirmed that allegations of an assault on a journalist are under police investigation, pledging full cooperation to establish the facts.

According to the statement, the footage appears to capture an incident involving firefighters and a suspected thief who, along with accomplices, had earlier attacked personnel at a fire scene.

“Management of the Service has constituted a committee to investigate the incident thoroughly and establish all relevant facts,” the release noted.

“While GNFS condemns attacks on its personnel, it equally frowns upon any form of physical or verbal assault on civilians by its personnel, regardless of the level of provocation,” the service emphasised its stance against misconduct.

The Service urged the public to remain calm and exercise restraint while investigations continue, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and transparency.

“GNFS remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and transparency in the discharge of its mandate and will continue to cooperate with the media and relevant authorities to ensure accurate public information,” the statement added.

The incident reportedly occurred during a fire outbreak at the Kasoa New Market on January 4, 2026, where tensions arose between firefighters, traders, and residents.
